The American Youth Sailing Force has been selected to be a challenger, representing the City of San Francisco, for the first ever Red Bull Youth America’s Cup to be sailed in September 2013. This event pits the best teams of six 19 to 24 year-olds from countries around the world against each other in the incredibly fast AC45 catamarans currently being sailed as part of the America’s Cup World Series. This is a chance for sponsors to associate their brand with the most watched sailing competition in the world.
There’s a very steep learning curve on these AC45 boats. We’ve seen mishaps by even the best sailors in these catamarans. To be able to handle the boats in summer’s big breezes, we will mirror what the professional teams do.
Our plan is to sail 5 days a week for the six months leading up to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup regatta September 1-4. We’ll be in the gym every morning and we’ll do a team debrief at the end of each day with the coaches we bring in to critique our sailing. We’ve seen how good crew work on these boats plays a crucial role in who wins. We want to be the best prepared team on the starting line.
As part of our program we’ll be doing outreach to young sailors around the country. We’ll speak at yacht club junior programs and at youth oriented regattas. The American Youth Sailing Force believes that youth talking to youth is the best way to motivate young sailors.
